November 2016 Newsletter: The Hard Part of Serving Others

Last month at Renew we held our canned goods trick or treat night, and now we’re heading off to the canned goods shopping night we do. We’ve collected so many canned goods. Why?

Well, it’s just something we’ve been doing I guess. That, and it’s an easy service opportunity anyone can do. You just show up with a couple dollars and off you go with your small group to the grocery store. Done.

Well, sort of. Here’s what I’ve noticed in past years. You all walk into the grocery store. A couple kids grab a cart and start playing bumper carts (don’t do this). A couple more run off to get the green beans. A few others are looking at ice cream (no, you can’t get any). And after herding all the cats back together the leader ends up owing an extra $5 at the register because this was not – even though it was intended to be – a group effort.

I guess that WAS an easy service opportunity anyone can do. It doesn’t take much to run chaotically around a grocery store (unless your shopping for your family’s Thanksgiving dinner…that, takes effort).
