December 2016 Newsletter: What do we really “get” out of Jesus’ birth?

Well it’s that time of year: Christmas. What does God coming to earth in the form of a baby have to do with us? Why do we believe it happened? Why is it so important to us? We know the Sunday school answer. We know the Christmas story of Jesus’ birth. But what does it have to do with us, today?

I want to ask the question, what do we “get” out of it? Why should we believe right now? This is maybe a selfish way to look at it, but we live in a consumerist culture. We’re all looking for the best product, the easiest way to do things; we have the “what’s in it for me” mentality. We basically discard things if they don’t fit into these categories. People tell me constantly how junky my car is and that I need to get a new one. It works just fine though. People say that because we are crazy consumers. We’ve been conditioned to think that way.
