1 Timothy – Ch 5, 6

1 Tim ch 5 and 6
Thoughts that stand out to me

Chapter 5:
  • “Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity” (v1-2)
  • Those in need and left all alone, put your hope in God and continue to pray night and day for his help. Those who live for pleasure are dead, even while they live. (v5-6)
  • Says that if we don’t provide for our family, we have “denied the faith and [are] worse than an unbeliever.” Ouch. Again, no wonder people don’t like the bible/Christians. (v8)
  • If there is any doubt that this was written to a specific church and should be read as such, this should clear it up: “Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.” (v23)
Chapter 6:
  • “If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing.” (v3-4)
  • “Godliness with contentment is great gain…the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” (v6,10)
  • “But you, man of God, flee from all of this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith.” (v11-12)
  • God lives in “unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see.” (v16)
  • “Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in doing so have wandered from the faith.” (v20-21)
